Anton is the only son and heir of the aging Duke of Falsborg in Nordfrisland. At age 22, he has been raised to take over daily maintenance of the family manor house, as well as managing the Falsborg agricultural possessions which primarily deal in cattle and some equestrian business. Anton is extremely talented with horses and spends a lot of his time in the stables, something that concerns his father, when he isn't giving the same attention to finding a future spouse and producing an heir to their noble line. Eventually, he decides to send Anton to Copenhagen to join the Royal Horse Guards, hoping some time in the military can set his priorities straight, and that high society life in the capital will offer more opportunities for him to meet a girl. Instead, Anton meets the young working class fellow, Erik Hald, among the Royal Guards, and the two initiate a secret relationship that will follow them all the way to the loss of Schleswig to Germany in 1864, ten years later.
